Typical email scamsTypical email scams ...

Unfortunately whilst most of our users are genuine farmers, engine enthusiasts and restorers wishing to sell genuine products, there will always be 'scammers' when dealing on the world-wide internet.

First signs of a scam email:

  • Offering more money.
  • Referring to Certified Cheques.
  • Not wanting to see the product or not asking detailed questions regarding the product itself.
  • Referring to shipping agents.
  • Poor English - message doesn't make real sense.

Remember - If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is!

What can you do to make sure your emailer is genuine?

If someone is interested in your advert, then it is very very likely they would want to talk to you about the product before mentioning payment. Therefore we would recommend that you ask the buyer to provide their telephone number so you can contact them or vice versa.

If they are genuine, they will have no problems in giving you their details and speaking to you.

Be very very careful of poor English and any emails from countries like Africa, where many of these scams originate from. A typical scammer will be offering to buy your item and paying by Cashiers Cheque, Building Society or Bankers Draft for an amount greater than you are asking, then to send the balance on once the cheque has cleared. This is a scam using stolen/forged bank drafts/cheques which can clear in 3 days and bounce in two months. You may then have no tractor, and have paid the scammer the surplus cash and your bank withdraws the total amount back from your account.

Typical email addresses to be wary about are:

  • Somebodies-name@Yahoo.com
  • Somebodies-name@Hotmail.com

Unfortunately 90% of all email scams originate from Yahoo or Hotmail accounts. Please remember though, there are millions of Yahoo and Hotmail users, so it’s only a very (very) small percentage of these people that use these accounts for spam emailing.

How can I be really sure?

It is imperative to independently verify that the Bankers Draft or Building Society cheque that you have accepted as payment is genuine. Your bank can do this for you but they will need all details of the cheque that you paid in so keep a photocopy of the cheque for reference.

A more secure way of receiving funds is to ask the buyer to arrange a CHAPS payment or inter-bank transfer directly to your account. Your bank can then confirm safe receipt of the funds independently.
